Gardaí in Galway have arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with the death of an elderly woman whose body was found in her home on the outskirts of the city yesterday morning.

The 78-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, died of head, neck and chest injuries.

She was found in a pool of blood at her home in Ballindooley, on the Headford Road, approximately three miles from Galway city centre.

The man was arrested this morning and taken to Mill Street garda station in Galway city for questioning.

He is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be detained for 12 hours.
