A man has been arrested by Gardaí investigating the 1998 Omagh bombing

A man has been arrested by Gardaí investigating the 1998 Omagh bombing. The 32-year-old man was arrested in Monaghan and is due to appear at the Special Criminal Court later today.

A Garda spokesman said the suspect was arrested in connection with "ongoing investigations into the Omagh bombing and issues related to that". It is expected he will be charged with membership of an illegal organisation.

Only one person has so far been convicted in connection with the blast that killed 29 men, women and children.

Relatives of victims of the bombing, frustrated by the slow pace of police investigations, have sought to bring those thought to be responsible to task by lodging civil suits against them.
