A Colorado man serving a life sentence for the 1991 kidnapping and murder of a 13-year-old girl claims to have killed 48 people across the United States, it was revealed today.
Robert Charles Browne told El Paso County Sheriff's investigators that the killings began in 1970 and ended when he was arrested in 1995 for the murder of 13-year-old Heather Dawn Church.
If true, Browne's claims could make him one of America's most prolific serial killers.
El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa told the Colorado Springs Gazette that he believed Browne's confession, which came during four years of interviews and written communications with detectives, was credible.
Browne, 53, pleaded guilty today to a second murder, the 1987 strangling of wife and mother Rocio Sperry.
