A 47-year-old man was remanded in custody yesterday when he appeared in court in connection with the shooting of a female supermarket worker in Balla, Co Mayo, last week.

Vincent O’Donnell from Knocknabrone, Mayo Abbey, Co Mayo, appeared before Judge Geoffrey Browne at a sitting of Harristown Court in Castlerea.

He is charged with assaulting a shop assistant at Gaughan’s Costcutters, Main Street, Balla, on May 31 last, causing her serious harm. Mr O’Donnell has been in custody for over a week at Castlerea prison.

In court yesterday, the judge made an order that Mr O’Donnell be medically assessed while in prison.
