Man (76) killed in Offaly car accident

A 76-year-old male driver died in a two-car collision near Banagher, Co Offaly shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday

A 76-year-old male driver died in a two-car collision near Banagher, Co Offaly shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday. The man, from Birr, died at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Meanwhile, a Garda investigation is being carried out into a suspected fatal hit-and-run early on Tuesday morning in Co Mayo. The accident, which occurred on the Westport to Castlebar road, claimed the life of Mr Edwin Gaughan from Lucan Street in Castlebar.

Mr Gaughan, who was in his early 30s, was buried yesterday.

Det Supt John McGinley, of Mill Street Garda station, Galway city, is to undertake a separate investigation into all of the events leading up to the incident.
