A 75-year-old man was in an "ill but stable" condition in hospital yesterday after he and his wife were attacked in their south Belfast home by two men wielding a sledgehammer on Wednesday evening.

The man suffered a broken right leg and broken wrist in the assault. The assailants also smashed the front windows of the couple's home in the Belvoir Park area before driving off.
