A pensioner was in a serious condition after an assault last night in Northern Ireland.

The 70-year-old man was attacked in Churchill Park in Portadown in Co Armagh.

He was found at about 5pm by a passer-by who alerted police.

Detectives in Craigavon are still trying to establish a motive for the assault but it is understood they are not treating it as sectarian.

Sinn Féin Assembly member John O'Dowd said the community in the nationalist Garvaghy Road in Portadown was shocked by the attack.

"The attack on this pensioner outside a local chip shop has the left the tight-knit community of Garvaghy road in shock," he said.
