LONDON - Dr Boutros Boutros Ghali, defying American threats to veto a second term as UN Secretary General, met Mr John Major last night but conspicuously won neither public praise nor a clear British endorsement of his candidacy.

Talks with the British Prime Minister arranged long before last week's row over his plans focused on a range of UN business, but official sources insisted there would be no British decision before consultations with allies.
