The body recovered from Lough Ree this afternoon has been identified as that of 71-year-old Walter Borner who had been missing since an accident on the lake on Sunday.

The body was recovered close to Nun's Island shortly after 1.30 p.m.

More than 60 divers have been searching Lough Ree for the body of Mr Walter Borner after a boating accident in which his wife, Ruth, drowned.

Ms Borner's body was discovered near Lecarrow, Co Roscommon, on Monday evening.

The couple's boat was found on Tuesday.  It had run aground on Inchmore island and its engine was still running.

The couple, who lived at Dorf, near Zurich, were very familiar with the River Shannon, having cruised it for up to four weeks every year for the past 30 years.  They were due to return to Switzerland on Tuesday evening.
