The German midfielder was sent off last week in Valencia and must serve a one-match European ban.
Liverpool are likely to pair Danny Murphy and Steven Gerrard in midfield, with Bruno Cheyrou and Emile Heskey also figuring in the midfield four.
Manager Gerard Houllier could also recall Djimi Traore at left-back and push John Arne Riise into a more forward role, with Senegal star Salif Diao coming into the equation.
