Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier was taken to hospital with chest pains during this afternoon's Premiership clash with Leeds United at Anfield.

The 54-year-old Frenchman was on the touchline during the first half of the match but did not re-emerge for the second half.

News of Houllier's health scare emerged during the second half of Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Premiership leaders Leeds.

Houllier's number two Phil Thompson took charge on the touchline after the break.

Thompson, speaking after the match, told Sky Sports 1: "At half-time, when doing our team talk, Gerard, after passing on information to the players, felt some discomfort in his chest.

"He immediately went to the treatment room. Our doctor took a look at him and checked him over.

"He's been taken to hospital. He's gone there with our club doctor. They've taken him there for observation.

"That's all that's happened at the moment. Obviously, it's very worrying for everyone.

"We've haven't heard anything from the hospital yet. We informed the players about it after the game." - PA
