The Live Register dropped by 2,870 people in May according to detailed figures released by the Central Statistics Office today.

A total of 20,194 persons left the Live Register in May 2001 but was offset by 17,324 new registrants giving a net decrease of 2,870 persons in the month.

This compares with a monthly decrease of 8,925 in May 2000. Other features include:

  • Average number of people signing off every week lower in May 2001 than in May 2000. In May 2001 an average of 5,049 people per week left the Live Register, compared with 6,321 in May
  • In May, there were 4,331 new claimants per week. This compares with 4,090 new claimants per week in May 2000.
  • On average, the number of male registrants decreased by 361 per week in May 2001, while the number of female registrants decreased by 357 per week.

The Live Register however, does not measure unemployment. It includes part-time workers (those who work up to three days a week), seasonal and casual workers entitled to Unemployment Assistance or Benefit.

Unemployment is measured by the Quarterly National Household Survey and the latest figure, for December - February 2001 is 65,600 persons unemployed.
