Gardaí have arrested two Lithuanian men for questioning in connection with the discovery of the remains of a Lithuanian man in a ditch near Dunboyne, Co Meath, last Sunday evening, writes Conor Lally.

One of the men was taken for questioning to Ashbourne Garda station where he was still being held last night. The second man was arrested in Blanchardstown where he was being held last night.

Gardaí are now satisfied that they have positively identified the dead man but were waiting for assistance from his family to confirm the identification. The motive for the attack is unclear and little is known about the dead man's background.

It is understood that gardaí have lodged a formal request with their counterparts in Lithuania to discover if the dead man was known to police there. He was found dead just before 5pm on Sunday on a remote roadway. He had sustained a number of injuries consistent with having been beaten before he died.
