One of the bigger cruise liners, the SS Norway, paid her first visit to an Irish port when she docked yesterday near Whitegate Oil Refinery in Cork Harbour during her first trans-Atlantic cruise of 1997.

The ship has accommodation for 2,400 passengers in 1,013 passenger cabins and has a crew of 970.

Formerly the SS France, the SS Norway measures 1,035 ft with a 110 ft beam.

She is 76,000 gross tonnage and has a top speed of 18 knots, allowing her to cross the Atlantic in an average time of five days.

Last year, she crossed the Atlantic for the first time in 17 years, and yesterday's visit to Cork is part of a 12-day cruise which started in New York and visited Newfoundland, and which will include visits to Southampton and Le Havre.
