A 21-year-old man was left in a critical condition yesterday after a shooting incident in a Limerick housing estate

A 21-year-old man was left in a critical condition yesterday after a shooting incident in a Limerick housing estate. The victim, who was named locally as Ian Brennan from St Mary's Park, Limerick, was shot twice in an incident near his home at 1am yesterday.

Mr Brennan suffered two gunshot wounds, one to his back and another to his abdomen, when he was targeted by a lone gunman on St Munchin's Street in St Mary's Park. He was rushed to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

He was recovering last night in the intensive care unit of the hospital, where his condition was described as "critical but stable".

A 20-year-old man was arrested shortly after the shooting and was still being questioned last night under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

A technical examination of the scene was carried out yesterday and gardaí are still searching for the weapon used in the attack, which is believed to have been a shotgun. Gardaí do not believe the shooting was feud-related and it is understood the victim's assailant was known to him. The arrested man is being questioned by detectives at Henry Street Garda station.
