A Limerick man has been charged with stealing a car worth €60,000.

A Limerick man has been charged with stealing a car worth €60,000.

Liam Keane (23), Singland Gardens, Ballysimon, Limerick, is alleged to have stolen the 07 Audi A4 from Philip Collopy at his home in St Mary's Park, Limerick, on September 2nd. He allegedly drove the car to Dublin where it was recovered on fire in Finglas by gardaí.

Mr Keane, a nephew of murdered Limerick criminal figure Kieran Keane, was further remanded in custody at Limerick District Court yesterday where he had been refused bail at a previous sitting.

Judge Tom O'Donnell had directed that he receive medical treatment to deal with his addictions.Defence solicitor Ted McCarthy, however, claimed yesterday his client had not received any medical attention despite the court order.

Judge O'Donnell said that as the State had made the bail objection they must accept that they had certain obligations and certain medical examinations should take place. He ordered that contact be made with Limerick Prison to organise medical attention for Mr Keane as he had previously directed. He remanded the accused in custody until October 9th when directions from the DPP are expected to made available.

Mr Keane had walked free from a murder trial at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin on November 2003 after several prosecution witnesses denied making statements about the killing of 19-year-old Eric Leamy.

Mr Keane had denied the murder at Lee Estate, Limerick, in August 2001. A nolle prosequi was entered in the case.
