Several units from Limerick Fire Brigade are tonight attempting to extinguish a fire at carpet and textiles store in the city centre.

The fire broke out at Cathedral Carpets in Mungret Street some time earlier in the evening.

Gardaí said they were confident nobody was in the building at the time of the blaze.

A spokesman station said the fire was gradually being brought under control but could not give details on the extent of the damage.

None of the surrounding buildings are believed to have been affected.
