Mr Terry Leyden, the former Minister of State, has said that he will not seek election to the late Senator Sean Fallon's seat in the Seanad by election unless he is endorsed by Fianna Fail.
Mr Leyden met the Fianna Fail leader, Mr Bertie Ahern, to discuss the nomination last Wednesday. He is now awaiting the party's decision, he added.
The Government parties have nominated Mr Sam McAughtry to contest the election.
