Morris tribunal: Former superintendent Kevin Lennon has angrily rejected suggestions that he told a garda to change a station diary to show he was still at work when a hoax extortion phone call was made from his home.

Mr Lennon told the Morris tribunal he had no input into the changing of the diary to show former garda John O'Dowd was still on duty when the hoax call was made to a suspect in the investigation into the death of cattle dealer Mr Richie Barron.

"I was the very man who was known as a disciplinarian in An Garda Síochána, who put discipline on the desk of my chief superintendent regularly," Mr Lennon said. "I actually reported Garda Mulligan and O'Dowd, the whole lot of them in April 1997 for discipline, and nothing came of it."

Mr Lennon said he trusted Mr O'Dowd and that two gardaí in the Donegal division brought him to where he was today.

"Who do you say they are?" asked tribunal barrister Paul McDermott.

"Det McMahon and Garda O'Dowd," said Mr Lennon.

"Supt Lennon you're a liar," said Mr O'Dowd. "That's what happened," said Mr Lennon, "Two members of the force brought me where I am in my dilemma this day."
