Leading light of old Labour, Jenkins, dies

Former British Chancellor, Home Secretary and president of the European Commission, Lord Jenkins of Hillhead has died.

Former British Chancellor, Home Secretary and president of the European Commission, Lord Jenkins of Hillhead has died.

A statement issued by his family said: "Dame Jennifer Jenkins and Charles, Cynthia and Edward are very sad to announce that their husband and father Roy Jenkins, collapsed and died this morning at home 9 a.m."

Lord Jenkins, formerly Roy Jenkins, was a major figure of British centre-left politics for 40 years, during which he and three other Labour Party politicians left the party to form the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which later merged with the Liberal Party to form the Liberal Democrats.

He was also a noted journalist and political biographer.
