Lawlor for jail tomorrow as he opts not to appeal sentence

Liam Lawlor will begin a 28-day jail term tomorrow after deciding not to appeal his sentence with the Supreme Court.

Liam Lawlor will begin a 28-day jail term tomorrow after deciding not to appeal his sentence with the Supreme Court.

The Dublin West TD said he would issue a statement clarifying his position at 5 p.m.

Lawlor was handed his third jail sentence by the High Court over his failure to fully reveal details of his financial affairs to Flood tribunal. He was also fined €12,700.

He previously was fined a similar amount and spent two one-week terms in jail for similar offences.

Lawlor told the Marian Finucane Showon RTÉ Radio this morning he would consult his legal team before deciding on whether to appeal. Had an appeal be unsuccessful, the Court could have increased the sentence.

Among 11 "deficiencies" in the disclosure of documents requested by the Flood Tribunal detailed by its lawyers before Mr Justice Smyth last Friday was that details of accounts held in Liechtenstein and accounts held by his son, Niall, had only now come to light.

"I have one numbered code bank account in Liechtenstein. This tribunal has sworn affidavits that I have eight - pure bunkum," he said.

A motion of censure against Lawlor will be moved in the Dáil on Thursday, with the Labour Party, who are proposing the motion, also seeking the Dublin West TD's resignation.
