Labour's National Executive is expected to appoint Mr Mike Allen as the party's new general secretary after his selection by an interview board chaired by the deputy leader, Mr Brendan Howlin.

Mr Allen, general secretary of the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed, is expected to take up his new post in February. The national executive will meet to ratify the appointment at the end of this month.
