A former spokesperson for the Society of St Vincent de Paul has been selected to replace Labour TD Ms Roisín Shortall on Dublin City Council.

Ms Mary Murphy was chosen at a Labour Party selection convention to replace Ms Shortall in the Finglas Ward because of the abolition of the dual mandate. She will also be the Labour candidate in next year's local elections.

Ms Murphy was National Social Policy Officer of the Society of St Vincent de Paul between 1998 and 2000 and has worked with the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed, Threshold and the Well Woman Centre.
