Berlin - The former German chancellor, Dr Helmut Kohl, is ready to mortgage his house to help his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party pay fines imposed over the slush fund he ran while in power, a magazine reported yesterday.
The weekly Wirthschaftswoche, previewing today's edition, said Dr Kohl was ready to use his house in Ludwigshafen in his campaign to raise DM6.3 million (£2.5 million) to make up for the approximately DM2 million in secret funds.
