Bonn - Chancellor Helmut Kohl's Christian Democrats yesterday seized on the collapse of coalition talks in an eastern German state as a sign the rival Social Democrats were not fit to govern.

The CDU general secretary, Mr Peter Hintze, said the determination of local SPD politicians to maintain an informal alliance with the ex-communist Party of Democratic Socialism in Saxony-Anhalt was a warning to voters in September's federal election.
