Killarney took the first step towards pedestrianisation last night when a pilot programme started to close the town centre to traffic each evening.

Streets in the town centre will be pedestrianised from 7 p.m. for the next three months, said Mr Sean Counihan, chairman of Killarney UDC, who performed "the official closing off" of town-centre streets.

Attempts to ban traffic in the town centre some years ago led to public protests. But a survey of businesses showed a majority now in favour.
