The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it has no report of Mr Kevin Crennan being kidnapped in Colombia.

A spokeswoman said its representatives in the region had been in contact with local police and they had no information of an abduction of the Irishman.

She was commenting on a newspaper report which claimed that Mr Crennan, who was recently arrested by Colombian police for failing to meet visa requirements, had been kidnapped by paramilitaries on the Venezuelan border.

Mr Crennan (37) had lost contact with his family for seven years before his arrest last month.
