LONDON – Four Kenyans have been given the go-ahead at the British high court to sue the British government in a test case over alleged atrocities committed during the anti-colonial Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s.

Ndiku Mutwiwa Mutua, Paulo Muoka Nzili, Wambugu Wa Nyingi and Jane Muthoni Mara are in their 70s and 80s.

At a hearing in April, the judge was told that Mr Mutua and Mr Nzili had been castrated, that Mr Nyingi was beaten unconscious in an incident in which 11 men were clubbed to death and that Ms Marahad been subjected to sexual abuse.

As many as 150,000 suspected members of the Mau Mau were detained without trial between 1952 and 1961. – (Reuters)
