Ireland should "keep its options open" on participation in a single European currency, according to Progressive Democrats spokesman on finance, Mr Michael McDowell.

"A decision in principle to join without sterling simply cannot be made at this remove in time from the commencement of EMU."

Until Ireland could "ascertain Britain's intentions and the proposed regime for the outside currencies, we simply cannot make a decision on EMU," said Mr McDowell in a statement.
