Keane on the double for Limerick

Mark Keane's clinical finishing brought to an end Tipperary's lengthy unbeaten run as he steered Limerick to a deserved victory over the All-Ireland champions in Division 1A of the NHL at Thurles this afternoon.

Tipperary were unbeaten in all championship and league fixtures since August 2000 but were no match for a flowing and skillful Limerick side on this occasion.

A strong breeze aided Tipperary in the first half but it was Limerick who found the net first through Keane. Eugene O'Neill pulled one back for the home side and Tipperary led by four points at the break.

Tipperary, however, never settled on their lead and allowed Limerick back into the contest. Keane found the net again in the 30th minute to level the game and added a brace of points soon after to secure the win.

In a repeat of last year's All-Ireland semi-final Galway defied a unfavorable second half head wind to defeat a disappointing Kilkenny at Ballinasloe.

Galway led by a single point at the break (6-5) and capitalised on some poor Kilkenny hurling in the second half to win the contest in a canter.

Kilkenny were rocked in the 45 minute with the dismissal of John Hoyne for a second bookable offence.

Kevin Broderick, Eugene Cloonan and substitute Joe Rabbitte were clinical in attack and secured victory for Noel Lane's side.

In the National Football League, Tyrone remain top of Division 1A after a comfortable victory over Offaly while Cork recorded their second win-in-a-row with a home win over Dublin.

Cork played outstanding team football and led Dublin by seven points to four at the break.

Philip Clifford and Fionan Murray recorded notable scores for Cork while Ciaran Whelan and Ray Cosgrove kept Dublin in touch. Brendan Jer O'Sullivan finished the game off with a nice goal five minutes from time.

Mayo - the reigning league champions - maintained their unbeaten record in Division 1B with a comfortable victory over Kildare while Derry recorded their first points of the campaign with a draw at home to Ulster rivals Fermanagh.
