Candidates in the European elections last June disclosed donations totaling €3,991,629, according to figures published today by the Standards in Public Office Commission (Sipo).

Candidates in the Dublin Central and South Dáil byelections disclosed spending of €259,760.

The commission said unsuccessful candidates disclosed donations of €86,432 in the European elections and €16,571 in the byelections.

Sipo also found that four European election candidates including Raymond O'Malley from Libertas and Independents Jim Tallon, John Francis Higgins and Thomas King had failed to return donation statements by the statutory deadline of July 31st.

The commission warned that their cases may be referred to the DPP if returns are not received by January 4th.
