Jump jockeys set for compensation

Irish National Hunt jockeys are set to be compensated for the cancellation of racing due to foot-and-mouth.

Irish National Hunt jockeys are set to be compensated for the cancellation of racing due to foot-and-mouth.

The Irish Jockeys’ Trust, set up by the Turf Club to assist jockeys in financial difficulties, is to pay a weekly wage to jump jockeys.

They will make payments on a sliding scale based on the number of rides the recipients had in Ireland last year.

Up to 50 rides will receive £50 per week, 51 to 180 (£125), 181 to 280 (£200) and over 280 (£275).

Only jockeys who held licences on February 27th, when racing was halted, will qualify. The first payments will cover the four week period to March 31st.

Payments for Flat jockeys will be considered at the end of April if restrictions continue. The Trust may amend the scheme if racing resumes on a restricted basis.
