A man serving life for the murder of BBC television presenter Jill Dando was refused bail today as he awaits his second appeal against conviction.

The case of Barry George, who was jailed for life in 2001 for Dando's murder, has been referred to the Court of Appeal after doubts were raised about firearms evidence given at his original trial.

The 47-year-old, who was not in court, was refused bail by Mr Justice Treacy.

The application came after the Criminal Cases Review Commission referred the case to appeal after a "thorough and intensive review".

"I am not persuaded at this stage that this is one of those rare cases where I can take the view that I could order the release on bail because the appeal will be successful," the judge told the court.

He rejected arguments that there were "exceptional circumstances that would drive me to the conclusion that justice could only be done by the granting of bail".

Jeffrey Samuels, defending George, had earlier told the court his client's appeal prospects were "very strong to the point of being unanswerable".

But Jonathan Laidlaw, prosecuting, said the Crown would fight any appeal and maintained the conviction was safe.
