Jenas strike enough for Newcastle

Teenager Jermaine Jenas fired Newcastle to within two points of second-placed Manchester United as they rode their luck to see off lowly Bolton.

Jenas' 18th-minute strike proved the matchwinner, and although Alan Shearer hit the bar after the break, only two good saves from Shay Given and a bad miss by Bernard Mendy denied the visitors a point as they staged a second-half rally.

The Bolton bench were screaming for a penalty a minute later after Mendy went down under Hughes' challenge as he tried to reach Ricketts' cross with the visitors dominating.

Given had to be at his best two minutes later when Ricketts' shot looped up off Caldwell and threatened to dip just under the bar, and Bergsson got his head to Djorkaeff's corner but directed his effort wide.

Newcastle decided the best form of defence was attack in the dying minutes, and Robert earned his side an 88th-minute free-kick after hewas tripped in full flow by Campo, but Jaaskelainen pulled off a fine save from the former Paris St Germain winger to keep his side's hopes alive.

Robert went for goal again deep into injury time, but saw his effort deflected over by N'Gotty.
