JAKARTA - The Indonesian military has backtracked on its allegation that the Australian Labour Party (ALP) was a possible financer of a pro-democracy group accused of inciting mass riots.

However, the head of the armed forces socio-political affairs department, Lt Gen Syarwan Hamid, told journalists here yesterday: "It wasn't the (Australian) Labour Party, but Australian labour organisations," without elaborating further.
