SIPTU confirmed today 240 workers at the Irish Ispat plant have rejected management proposals which the union claims seek a reduction in workers' employment entitlements.
According to a SIPTU statement today management is seeking a 10 per cent reduction in wages, 12 to 15 redundancies and to reduce annual leave by six days. The company is seeking savings of £2.3 million.
The union is also asking Ispat International to commit itself to the long-term future of Irish Ispat at Haulbowline in Cork.
A meeting between management and unions will take place tomorrow.
The Irish Ispat chief executive Mr Jerry O'Gorman was unavailable for comment and the company was unable to provide another representative.
