Denis Irwin has signed a new one year contract with Manchester United quashing speculation that he would move to Gianluca's Vialli's Watford.

Irwin became a free agent last Saturday when his previous 12 month contract at Old Trafford expired.

The former Republic of Ireland full back had attracted interest from Premiership rivals Newcastle United, relegated Coventry City and first division side Watford.

However, the 35-year-old Corkman signed a new contact this afternoon after negotiations with club officials.

Irwin moved to the reigning Premiership champions in 1990 from Oldham.
