A young Irish backpacker from Co Kildare has died in Sydney, Australia, following a weekend road accident.

A young Irish backpacker from Co Kildare has died in Sydney, Australia, following a weekend road accident.

Mr Liam Byrne (23), of Leixlip, died on Tuesday after suffering severe head injuries when he and a friend were hit by a taxi on Sunday.

His family had travelled to Australia to be with him in hospital.

His 22-year-old friend from the Leixlip area, Mr Darren Murray, received minor injuries to his head, leg and arms but was discharged from hospital on Monday.

The two were knocked down as they and three other Irish friends walked home from a night out at about 2.30 a.m.

The five had been attempting to cross a road close to a zebra crossing in the Bondi area of the city when the accident happened. Bondi, a beachside suburb in east Sydney, is a popular destination for young Irish backpackers on one-year working holiday visas.

A 37-year-old man has been charged in connection with the incident.

Mr Byrne had been in Australia on a one-year working holiday visa since last December and was to return next month along with his friends.
