A Irish woman has been seriously injured in a shooting on the Canary Islands.

Michelle Massey, from Co Limerick, is in a serious condition in hospital following the incident on Lanzarote.

The incident took place in Tinajo, the main administrative village of the north of Lanzarote.

A Spanish man has been arrested but remains in hospital after he too was shot, Las Palmas police said.

The local La Voznewspaper reported that the 45-year-old man shot the woman before turning the gun on himself.  He suffered serious facial injuries.

Both were originally treated at a hospital in Arrecife, but because of the severity of their injuries, they were later transferred to Doctor Negrin hospital in Gran Canaria.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman confirmed the Government was offering consular assistance to the injured woman.

Ms Massey, who has a six-month-old son, is originally from Moyross in Limerick city. She moved to the Canaries in 2006 and had been working in a bar in the Puerto del Carmen resort.
