A senior Irish soldier is appearing today as a witness at the trial of former Yugoslav president Slobadan Milosevic at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague.

Col Colm Doyle was the special representative for Lord Peter Carrington, the chairman of the international peace conference in Yugoslavia in 1992.

Col Doyle was in the Balkans as hostilities escalated in the early nineties and is being questioned by the prosecution and by Slobadan Milosevic, who is representing himself.

Milosevic, who has been on trial at the Hague since February 2002, returned to the dock yesterday after a three-week break.
