The BBC said last night it hoped the findings of an inquest into the death of one of its cameraman shot by militants in Saudi Arabia would help the healing process for his friends and family.

West London coroner Alison Thompson ruled that Simon Cumbers (36) was unlawfully killed when he was gunned down on June 6th, 2004.

Mr Cumbers, from Navan, Co Meath, was a freelance journalist and cameraman who had worked throughout the world for the BBC, Associated Press Television and ITN.

The BBC cameraman came under fire from gunmen in the south of the capital Riyadh while filming a report about increasing fear among Saudi workers.

Security correspondent Frank Gardner was seriously injured in the shooting. He covered major stories, such as the sinking of the Kursk submarine in Russia in 2000, the Israeli siege of Bethlehem in 2002 and the Madrid train bombings in Spain in 2004.

Mr Cumbers also ran his own news production company with his wife, Louise Bevan, a fellow journalist.
