The dead man,  who was 23, and the other man aged 21, had been travelling on a rural unsealed road in the Ida Valley, in Otago at 1.30am on Saturday morning when the crash occurred

The Land Rover Discovery vehicle in which the men were travelling failed to take a bend and left the road, rolling through a fence into a paddock.

Both of the men worked in the Ida Valley.

A vehicle travelling in front of the men returned to find them minutes after the crash before the occupants then travelled to a nearby farmhouse to raise the alarm.

Local police, fire and ambulance staff attended the scene and a serious crash investigator will visit the site this morning to establish the cause of the crash.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs has said that the victims' families are being notified.
