The body of an Irish man has been discovered close to a beach in Tanzania.

The body of an Irish man has been discovered close to a beach in Tanzania.

The body was found off a beach in northern Zanzibar yesterday morning, and is said to be that of Robert Stringer (26), from Co Wicklow. He is reported to have suffered head injuries.

Mr Stringer had been working with Irish charity Camara, which provides computers to developing countries. It is believed he had finished working with the charity before travelling to Zanzibar.

A postmortem is being carried out and local poice are investigating the matter.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was providing consular assistance to the man's family, and said the Irish embassy in Dar-es-Salaam was in contact with the Tanzanian authorties. The Department did not comment further on the matter.
