An 18-year-old from from Bagenalstown, Co Carlow is the first Irish cystic fibrosis patient to undergo a double lung transplant in Ireland.

Paul Minchin was discharged today from the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

Till last month, when Mr Minchin underwent the transplant, such operations on Irish patients have been performed in England.

The Cystic Fibrosis Association confirmed the double lung transplant, saying "our best wishes go to Paul and his family".

Mr Minchin is recovering well and was looking forward to heading home today, it was reported.
