Irish cyclist David McCann rode above expectations at the World Road Championships in Hamilton, Canada, but just missed out on an Olympic qualification.

He was three minutes and 42 seconds off the winning time set by Scottish rider David Millar over the difficult 41.6-kilometre test in the Elite Men's Individual Time Trial. He finished 27th of 44 starters.

McCann was just outside his target of finishing inside the top 15 nations, ending up 18th and so narrowly missing out on Olympic qualification.
