Max Treacy and Anthony Shanks lead the Irish sailors challenging for the Bacardi Cup in Miami.

They lie in 12th position after two races with a combined total of 36 points.

The Royal St George (Dun Laoghaire) crew, relative newcomers to the international scene, finished 13th in race one and 23rd in the second to keep them in touch with the leaders in the six race series.

The more experienced Irish pairing of Mark Mansfield and Killian Cullins, ranked fourth in the latest International Sailing Federation's standings, had a disastrous first race by their lofty standards, finishing back in 47th.

On day two, however, the Royal Cork duo made light of the difficult conditions on Biscayne Bay to cross the line sixth on an afternoon when only 60 of the 96 boats completed the course.

That impressive result moves the team into 19th spot overall. Their Royal Cork colleagues, Maurice O'Connell and Jamie McWilliam, were among the 36 crews who failed to complete race two and need some big results over the next four days to make an impact.

John MacCausland and Sean Delaney of America hold the overall lead with four races remaining.
