Yellow weather warning in place for northwestern counties

Temperatures will drop to between 1 and 5 degrees with some frost expected

There is a status yellow wind warning in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo on Sunday night.

The warning was issued around 5:30pm and will stay in place until 11pm.

Southerly winds, veering westerly, will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h, with gusts of 90 to 110km/h possible.

Stronger winds, reaching almost gale force, are expected along coastal areas and on higher ground in the west and north. Some severe gusts are possible, and there may be some fallen trees and power outages as a result.

These winds will gradually ease from the south later on tonight.

Overnight, it will become dry, but there may be a stray shower or two around the northwest.

Lowest temperatures will be between 1 to 5 degrees, with a touch of frost in places.

Some mist and fog patches will form by morning, as winds become light and variable.

The weather will become more settled on Monday morning.

The day will start off dry with good sunny spells. It will be cloudier in the southeast, with some patches of rain and drizzle at times.

There will also be a few scattered showers in the northwest too.

Across the country, there will be light southwesterly or variable breezes.
