Man believed to have been dead for a month before discovery

Flat in Westport, Co Mayo, had been rented to a male in his 70s with UK connections

An elderly man is believed to have lain dead in an apartment in Co Mayo for up to a month before his body was discovered.

Gardaí are working with Interpol to find the next of kin of the man whose remains were discovered on Friday in an apartment in Westport.

The remains have been brought to the mortuary of Mayo General Hospital as efforts to identify the man continue.

Gardaí were called by the landlord of an apartment at Knockranny Flats, Westport, after he discovered the body on Friday.

Foul play is not suspected.

The apartment had been rented to a man, believed to be in his 70s, with UK connections.

DNA tests may be required in order to make a definite ID, according to garda sources.
