Man (42) drowns in John’s River in Waterford

A post-mortem is being carried out on Wednesday on the body of a man who drowned after falling into a river in Waterford on Tuesday night.

Gardaí are not treating the death as suspicious and believe that the 42-year-old slipped and fell into the John’s River, near the Tramore Road in Waterford city, after he was drinking in the area with other people.

The incident happened close to the Kingfisher club, at a walkway that leads from the city centre along the John’s River to the outer ring road.

A woman who was with the man at the time raised the alarm around 9.40pm and ambulance control in Waterford notified the gardaí.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and found a man lying face down in the water. They pulled him out of the river and attempts were made to resuscitate him, but to no avail.

He was then taken by ambulance to University Hospital Waterford were further attempts were made to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at about 11pm.
