An investigation is under way after the discovery of a body off the Co Mayo coast.

There has been no positive identification of the remains found near Lacken which are being taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar for a postmortem examination.

The discovery comes two weeks after fisherman Daniel Doherty went missing.

Mr Doherty (23), Carrowteigue, Belmullet, has been missing since September 11th when he took his trawler to attend lobster pots off Benwee Head.

His vessel, Carragh Rose, drifted ashore on the evening he went missing. There was no sign of Mr Doherty.

There has been an extensive search for Mr Doherty since he went missing two weeks ago involving a Coast Guard helicopter, two RNLI lifeboats, Garda divers, gardaí and civilians.
